India Post GDS Recruitment 2026

Department of Posts, under the Ministry of Communications, Government of India, has invited online applications for engagement of Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) for January 2026 cycle. The recruitment is conducted to fill vacancies for Branch Postmaster (BPM), Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM), and Dak Sevak posts in various postal circles across India.

Gramin Dak Sevaks are not regular central government employees, but they hold civil posts outside the regular civil services. Their engagement and service conditions are governed by the GDS (Conduct and Engagement) Rules, 2020, as amended from time to time. These posts are mainly located in rural and semi-urban areas, and candidates are expected to serve in the local delivery jurisdiction.

Branch Postmaster (BPM) – Job Role

The Branch Postmaster is responsible for the overall functioning of the Branch Post Office. Duties include:

• Managing daily postal operations and India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) services

• Handling customer transactions and postal schemes

• Marketing and promoting postal and financial products

• Supervising mail conveyance and delivery

• Managing branch office records and reports

A selected BPM must arrange accommodation at their own cost for running the Branch Post Office and must reside in the same village where the post office is located.

Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) – Job Role

The Assistant Branch Postmaster assists the BPM in day-to-day activities. Responsibilities include:

• Sale of stamps and stationery

• Mail delivery and collection

• IPPB transactions such as deposits and payments

• Supporting BPM in postal operations and customer service

• Performing BPM duties in case of absence

ABPMs must reside within the delivery jurisdiction of the concerned post office.

Dak Sevak – Job Role

Dak Sevaks are engaged in Branch Offices, Sub Post Offices, Head Post Offices, and Railway Mail Service units. Their duties include:

• Doorstep delivery of letters and parcels

• Sale of postal products and stationery

• Handling mail sorting and dispatch

• Assisting Postmasters in office work

• Performing any other duties assigned by postal authorities

Dak Sevaks must also reside within the delivery area of the assigned office.

Working Hours & Allowances

GDS employees work for a minimum of 4 hours and a maximum of 5 hours per day. They are paid Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA) with an annual increment and Dearness Allowance as per government rules. Additional benefits include GDS gratuity and social security schemes.

Selection Process

Selection is purely merit-based, calculated from marks obtained in the 10th standard examination. There is no written exam or interview. Shortlisted candidates must undergo physical document verification before final engagement.
